How to Cope with Working From Home
Just a few weeks ago, it seems, everything was normal. Suddenly it is all different. Homelife and working life has suddenly blended into one. Not only that the living room now doubles as an office and a school. There are loads of distractions to boot, including TV, a comfy sofa and possibly children requiring entertainment. This new environment is very different and requires quite a disciplined approach if it is to be successful.
Your New Home Office
First things first, if you can try to separate your work from your main living space. If you are lucky enough to have a spare room use that, if not, use the dining room to work in, whilst keeping the living room just for that. In a smaller flat type environment, work in the area with the least distractions.
Over the past few weeks I have has the most strange video conferences, from bedrooms, to kitchens, even from in the garden. Someone did a conference from their bedroom and the bed wasn’t even made with clothes scattered all over the floor!
Maximising Your Working
After you have found the best place to work you need to maximise your working potential.
Be Disciplined
It’s very easy to have that extra half hour in bed, but try not to do that. You may already be saving time by not commuting, so utilise that, but not by sleeping in – you will end up messing up your body clock.
Establish a routine early on with your day planned out and stick to it. Have set times for answering your emails and admin work. Plan meetings in advance and stick to those, and schedule plenty of time for you to do your actual work.
Maintain set lunch hours and breaks, that is very important for your mental well being and keep a slot in their for exercise too.
Sometimes it is far too easy to keep working when you are working from home and you miss those vital breaks. This can actually have the reverse effect and reduce productivity and motivation.
Maintain Interactions with Colleagues
We are social animals and in times like these we really do need to maintain contact with work mates. Emails, text chats and phone calls are great, but video chats really do help keep those social bonds going.
Yes it is strange at first, you suddenly get the urge to tidy the house before a business meeting. The kids may barge in. But at the moment it’s happening to everyone and to be honest – it’s really refreshing. Could it be that this crisis ends up breaking down social barriers rather than building them up.
Once you get used to a video conference they are pretty much the same as a standard meeting. Yes there are technical hurdles to overcome. My computer froze and needed a restart, someone else couldn’t download the required spreadsheet on their computer, another user had a microphone that made her sound like a robot. But, we all managed it and the meeting was as successful as any face to face ones that I have had.
Try to Keep the Distractions at Bay
Oh, my coffee maker is so tempting. I can just keep popping over and making myself a cappuccino. Perhaps I should check my twitter timeline, or facebook, or Netflix….. where does it end. The cat jumps up and wants attention and mashes the keyboard.
There is less focus when working at home and it is a challenge at first to avoid these distractions. If however you keep up with the daily schedule I talked about before, eventually you will gain the discipline nt to let these affect you.
In Summary
Working from home has its challenges but it also has many rewards, including a very different lifestyle. Whether we like it or not many of us will have to embrace it and hopefully be successful.
Who knows; post Coronavirus, may open the gateway to more home working.
