cPanel Directory Privacy
The cPanel Directory Privacy tool, forms part of our series, looking into the uses of some of the lesser known features of cPanel. Here we look at how it works and some of the uses it has.
Directory privacy allows you to protect specific directories in your hosting environment. If you turn this feature on for a folder, anyone visiting the folder via your website will have to log in with the correct credentials. It is a useful tool to have to perhaps store items in a download folder that is only accessible to employees.

1) Protect Folders and Their Sub Folders
If you protect a folder all it is protected as are all folders in side of it..
Using cPanel Directory Privacy
1) Accessing cPanel

| 2. Go to the service that you wish to work on and navigate to your cPanel. This should login automatically. Other providers may vary. |  |
| 3. Once in your cPanel choose the Directory Privacy Icon |  |
| 4. You will now be presented with the folder options. |  |
2) Using Directory Privacy
| You will be presented with the folder structure of your website.
Important – Follow these carefully as it took me ages to work out how to navigate my folder structure!

| 2.Click on the folder that you wish to protect. I have chosen the folder “ProtectMe”
The following options will appear. |

| 3. Complete the fields. Making sure you choose a strong password. You will also need to create a user name. |  |
| 4. Once you clicked save, you will be given the opportunity to add additional users if you wish. Each one of these will need their own password. | |
| 5. Once you try to access this folder you will be asked for a username and password. |
In Summary
The cPanel Directory Privacy tool offers a number of basic features for protecting a folder. It is a handy tool for for quickly password protecting a folder, to be downloaded by someone known, but it is not as flexible as some other online tools such as Dropbox. Even CMS software such as wordpress have plugins that will do the job more effectively. On occasions I also had limited success with it working, as it seemed to conflict with other entries in the .htaccess file.
