Having an SSL certificate is pretty much standard fayre these days, and without it your Google ratings can take a hit.
Since each hosting plan comes with a free Let’s Encrypt certificate it’s important that you know how to implement it correctly.
Be Patient
When you first buy your domain name it takes about 24 hours before it will resolve correctly. Sometimes when you transfer a domain name it can take up to 5 days. You will not be able to install the SSL certificate until your domain name is resolving around the world.
You can use a tool such as this DNS Propagation Tool to check the progress of your propagation.
A word of warning though, tools like this don’t show everything, asn sometimes propagation can look complete, even if you have a few more hours to wait.
Check File Permissions
Before Let’s Encrypt can validate your website your .htaccess file in your /public_html/ must be writable. It usually is, so you probably won’t have to worry about that. If however it isn’t you will have to go into file manager and change the permissions.
Auto SSL
Once these conditions have been met, the propagation and the file permissions, the Let’s Encrypt certificate should automatically be installed!
You can verify that the certificate in installed by logging into your cPanel and checking the General Information section. You should see a padlock next to your domain name and DV certificate in green.
Forcing Auto SSL
Sometimes, for whatever reason Auto SSL takes longer than expected to run and you may wish to force it.
Simply log into your cPanel and go to cPanel -> SSL/TLS Status -> Select domain (s) -> Click Run Auto SSL.
The process will take a few minutes and the certificate should be generated.
