Splendid Support – In my many years of using a wide range of different hosting companies, the one thing that I have really valued is the support.
The support offered is absolutely fundamental to a successful hosting experience.
As you develop your website you will face problems. There may be a plugin that throws up an unexpected error, or you may muck up a config file and render your website useless.
In these circumstances you want fast and professional support, that doesn’t mock you for doing something daft.
Professional Support
I remember some time ago when I made the first big step from shared hosting to a VPS server. Now, on a shared hosting server most of the complicated set up is done for you. On a VPS server you are given a lot more free reign which has its upsides and downsides. You get the ability to tweak the webserver ‘under the bonnet’, but you also have the ability to render it useless.
Anyway, had been told that installing a specific cache package on my VPS would enhance web speed by 300%. So I went ahead and did it. Unfortunately, being new I accidentally installed the wrong package and broke the entire VPS.
Being a typical bloke I refused to swallow my pride and ask for help because I thought the support team would think I was an idiot who couldn’t resist fiddling.
From Bad to Worse
As I tried to fix the server things went from bad to worse. I got lost in the world of Linux scripts and more of more of the VPS stopped working.
In the end I finally relented and contacted the support desk.
They were very understanding and respectful, and were able to take a backup of my website data, then reinstall the VPS. It took all of 30 minutes. Just 30 minutes! I had wasted hours!
Lessons Learned
When things like this occur you learn a lot about your hosting environment. I also learned the value of good support. This is a value you I continue to have today and forms part of our core values for this company. I have found over the years that many of the smaller hosting providers offer services comparable if not better than the larger companies. More importantly they offer much better support.
You may not get a 24/7 call center, but you will reach people who will actually care about you and your website. And that caring really matters!
