cPanel Web Disk
The cPanel Web Disk is a great feature that allows you to manage, navigate, upload and download files on your web server as if they were stored on your local computer.
Once this is set up you can use the file manager on your computer, e.g Windows Explorer in Windows, or Finder in Mac OS to browse your data. You can also drag and drop files between your server and your computer.
Directory privacy allows you to protect specific directories in your hosting environment. If you turn this feature on for a folder, anyone visiting the folder via your website will have to log in with the correct credentials. It is a useful tool to have to perhaps store items in a download folder that is only accessible to employees.

Using cPanel Web Disk
1) Setting up The Account
|
|
2. Go to the service that you wish to work on and navigate to your cPanel. This should login automatically. Other providers may vary.
3. Once in your cPanel choose the Directory Privacy Icon
4. The first thing you need to do is to check the user name of the Web Disk user and make sure you have a password for this. You can also create additional users with additional passwords.
5. If you plan to use Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 or Windows 10 you must first select Enable Digest Authentication. This will allow you to access your web disk on your PC.
6. The dialogue looks like this and you need to enter the password for the account you wish to use the web disk.
7. Once this is set up you will find a collection of instructions of how to set this up for a variety of operating systems.
8. Simply Choose the operating system you wish to use. There are even phone apps that can be used to access your files when on the move. |
|
9 . Depending on your operating system you may need to open ports on the firewall to allow the traffic through. Typically you need to open Ports 2077-2078 with TCP selected as the protocol. |
In Summary
The cPanel Web disk tool is very flexible and allows you to edit your webserver files directly using your favourite editor or IDE installed on your computer. It seems a little sluggish to pull down the directories on the first attempt, but after that, (I assume they are cached) they work fine. I personally haven’t experienced any connectivity issues but some have been reported. There are some great free phone apps that not only allow you to view your web structure, but also allow editing of files. This could be handy if you want to make a single tweak, whilst on the road.
